Hidden in plain heat: anomalous Lorenz number in the thermoelectric alloy Bi_0.4Sb_1.6Te₃

The high thermoelectric performance reported in melt-spun Bi_0.4Sb_1.6Te₃ has been misattributed to a strong reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity, due to too high Lorenz numbers used to estimate the electronic contribution.

Strong crystalline thermal insulation induced by extended antibonding states

Here, the authors report AgTl₂I₃ as a crystalline thermal insulator with an ultralow κ of 0.21 W m⁻¹ K ⁻¹ at 300 K, which further decreases with elevated temperature due to extended antibonding states that suppress phonon transport.
