  • Thin films of halide perovskites are promising for solar cell technology but they do not perform well at the band edge due to the low optical absorption. Herein, Chen et al. fabricate a high efficiency single crystal perovskite solar cell with thicker single crystals to harvest the below-bandgap photons.

  • X-ray detectors based on dual-site-doped perovskite single crystals exhibit excellent sensitivity of 2.6 × 104 μC Gyair−1 cm–2 under a low field of 1 V cm–1. The detectable dose rate is as low as 7.09 nGyair s–1. The operational stability is beyond half a year.

  • Achieving bright and efficient blue emission in metal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes has proven to be challenging. Here, the authors demonstrate high EQE and spectrally stable blue light-emitting diodes based on mixed halide perovskites, with emission from 490 to 451 nm by using a vapour-assisted crystallization technique.

  • The field of perovskite light-emitting diodes witnesses rapid development in both device processing strategies and performances. Here Wang et al. develop high-quality perovskite-molecule composite thin films and achieve high quantum efficiency of 17.3% and half-lifetime of 100 h.

  • Optoelectronic devices based on organic–inorganic halide perovskites show promising performance, but their poor stability impedes the commercialization. Here Lin et al. show that excess free charges are detrimental and efficient charge-carrier extraction is necessary for improved device stability.

  • True random number generation is not thought to be possible using a classical approach but by instead exploiting quantum mechanics genuine randomness can be achieved. Here, the authors demonstrate a certified quantum random number generation using a metal-halide perovskite light emitting diode as a source of weak coherent polarisation states randomly producing an output of either 0 or 1.
