Transverse waves in liquids exhibit a wave-vector-gapped dispersion, as predicted by Maxwell-Frenkel theory and observed in simulations. Here, the authors provide direct experimental evidence of this effect in an active Brownian particle system, revealing a dynamical crossover to a gas-like phase as the packing fraction decreases.
