Guanine-rich regions in several organisms emit visible light upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation; however, the underlying mechanism remains largely unexplored. In this work, the authors report blue emission from laboratory-grown guanine crystals and attribute the fluorescence origin to a combination of factors, including charge-transfer interactions and crystallization-induced emission.
