Acquisition of aluminium tolerance by modification of a single gene in barley

Barley is an important food crop that has been adapted to grow on acidic soils that often contain toxic soluble aluminium. In this study, an insertion in the upstream region of a citrate transporter is shown to confer resistance of barley to aluminium toxicity and is found in aluminium-tolerant barley accessions.

Breeding for low cadmium barley by introgression of a Sukkula-like transposable element

The primary source of human exposure to the highly toxic heavy metal cadmium (Cd) is diet. This study identified a gene encoding a P-type heavy metal ATPase 3 (HvHMA3) that is responsible for Cd accumulation in barley grain. A Sukkula-like transposable element was found to play an important role in upregulating the expression of HvHMA3, thereby decreasing Cd accumulation in the grain.

Training instance segmentation neural network with synthetic datasets for crop seed phenotyping

Toda et al. train a neural network algorithm for crop seed segmentation using synthetically generated datasets. The model achieves very high precision and is effective for a variety of seeds like barley, rice, and lettuce. Their approach will reduce human labor costs needed to prepare training datasets for similar algorithms for agricultural applications.
