Reduced nitrogenase efficiency dominates response of the globally important nitrogen fixer Trichodesmium to ocean acidification

Findings regarding the impacts of ocean acidification (OA) on the growth and N₂ fixation of Trichodesmium are conflicted. Here, the authors find that Trichodesmium growth rates decrease under OA primarily due to reduced nitrogenase efficiency and OA under RCP 8.5 could reduce the N₂ fixation potential of Trichodesmium by 27%.

Substrate regulation leads to differential responses of microbial ammonia-oxidizing communities to ocean warming

Microbial ammonia oxidation is important in marine nutrient cycling and greenhouse gas dynamics, but the responses to ocean warming are unclear. Here coast to open ocean incubations show that projected year 2100 temperatures might be too hot for these microbes in oligotrophic regions to handle, but may facilitate oxidation rates in coastal waters.

Phosphate limitation intensifies negative effects of ocean acidification on globally important nitrogen fixing cyanobacterium

How reduced seawater pH and increased carbon dioxide might affect the prominent nitrogen fixer Trichodesmium in phosphorus-limited oceans is poorly understood. This study used phosphate-limited chemostat experiments to show that Trichodesmium may fix less nitrogen for a given amount of phosphorus at low pH. Thus, marine productivity is likely to decline in a future, more acidic ocean.

Ambient nitrate switches the ammonium consumption pathway in the euphotic ocean

The underlying regulatory mechanisms of phytoplankton assimilation and microbial oxidation of ammonium in the surface ocean are unclear. Here, using isotope labeling experiments, the authors show that ambient nitrate is a key variable bifurcating ammonium flow through assimilation or oxidation.

Non-enzymatic heparanase enhances gastric tumor proliferation via TFEB-dependent autophagy

Non-enzymatic HPA reduces mTOR expression and inhibits TFEB phosphorylation, resulting in dissociation of mTOR binding to 14-3-3 protein. The dephosphorylated TFEB is subsequently translocated into the nucleus and activates the expression of autophagy and lysosomal genes which promote the autophagic process and thereby aggravate the growth of gastric cancer cells.
