A multicellular star-shaped actin network underpins epithelial organization and connectivity

The combined role of cellular junctions and actomyosin networks in tissues remains unclear. Here, the authors identify a tissue-scale star-shaped network of actomyosin that preserves cell shape, limits migration, and coordinates the intestinal epithelium.

Coordinated beating of motile cilia is important to clear mucus from the airway. Here, Clare et al. show that galectin-3 at the base of motile cilia in the trachea is important for connecting cortical microtubules to the basal body, and subsequent organization and coordination of beating cilia.

The organization and force-generating property of actomyosin dictate the plasticity and behaviour of cells but the spatio-temporal regulation of this network is unclear. Here, the authors show that coupling between EpCAM/RhoA co-trafficking and actomyosin rearrangement is pivotal during cell spreading and polarization.

Contractile forces at tricellular contacts modulate epithelial organization and monolayer integrity

EpCAM is an unconventional epithelia-specific cell–cell adhesion molecule, that is mutated in the majority of cases of Congenital Tufting Enteropathy. Here the authors show that loss of EpCAM causes a concentration of contractile activity at tricellular junctions, leading to aberrant apical domain and tight junction displacement.
