Revealing multiscale competing processes in the solid-state synthesis of single-crystalline layered oxide positive electrodes

Solid-state synthesis of single-crystalline battery cathodes is widely used but remains poorly understood. Here, authors reveal competing multiscale chemical and structural processes during sintering that are crucial for understanding structure–property relationships and guiding materials optimization.

Detection of subsurface structures underneath dendrites formed on cycled lithium metal electrodes

Failure caused by dendrite growth in rechargeable batteries with lithium metal anodes has prevented their widespread applicability. A microtomography study on lithium–polymer–lithium cells now reveals that at the early stage of dendrite formation dendritic structures lie within the electrode, underneath the polymer/electrode interface.

Real-time quantitative imaging of failure events in materials under load at temperatures above 1,600 °C

Gathering information on the evolution of small cracks in ceramic matrix composites used in hostile environments such as in gas turbines and hypersonic flights has been a challenge. It is now shown that sequences of microcrack damage in ceramic composites under load at temperatures up to 1,750 °C can be fully resolved with the use of in situ synchrotron X-ray computed microtomography.

Unraveling the effect of collagen damage on bone fracture using in situ synchrotron microtomography with deep learning

Collagen is known to play a key role in the fracture resistance of bone. Here, in situ synchrotron tomography during the mechanical testing of bone is combined with deep learning to mitigate radiation damage, revealing that a compromised collagen network lowers the efficacy of crack deflection.
