Episodic entrainment of deep primordial mantle material into ocean island basalts

It is unclear why some ocean island basalts at ‘hotspots’ have low ³He/⁴He ratios similar to mid-ocean ridge basalts. Here, the authors perform convection calculations and show that these isotopic ratios can be reproduced by the episodic entrainment of deep isolated mantle reservoirs into thermal plumes.

Chemical complexity of hotspots caused by cycling oceanic crust through mantle reservoirs

Lavas erupted at ocean island hotspots have complex geochemical signatures. Numerical simulations suggest that this complexity may result from the mixing of subducted oceanic crust with reservoirs of more primitive material in the deep mantle, with the resulting mixture entrained into rising mantle plumes.

Seismic detection of folded, subducted lithosphere at the core–mantle boundary

Seismic tomography of the D″ region beneath the Caribbean reveals a 100-km vertical step in an otherwise flat D″ shear velocity discontinuity and localized low velocities at the edge of the slab material, which may involve upwellings caused by the slab laterally displacing a thin hot thermal boundary layer.

Two large zones through which seismic waves travel unusually slowly are found at the base of Earth's mantle. These zones are thermally and chemically distinct from the surrounding mantle and may be a source for mantle plumes.

Experimental constraints on the electrical anisotropy of the lithosphere–asthenosphere system

Electrical anisotropy measurements at high temperatures and quasi-hydrostatic pressures on previously deformed olivine plus melt samples show that electrical conductivity is much higher in the direction of deformation; this is confirmed with a layered electrical model of the asthenosphere and lithosphere that reproduces existing field data.
