Catalyst switch strategy enabled a single polymer with five different crystalline phases

Well-defined multicrystalline multiblock polymers are essential model polymers for advancing the physics of crystallization but due to the different chain properties and incompatible synthetic methodologies, multicrystalline multiblock polymers with more than two crystallites are rarely reported. The Lebedev process is an established approach to convert ethanol into butadiene catalysed by silica–magnesia prepared by the so-called wet-kneading method. However, the role and impact of this wet-kneading approach have not been fully uncovered. Here the authors reveal important aspects of this process and elucidate the role of the different active sites it generates within silica–magnesia.

The structure and binding mode of citrate in the stabilization of gold nanoparticles

The manner in which carboxylates bind to the surface of nanoparticles has been an important question in materials science. Now, multinuclear magnetic resonance experiments — alongside DFT calculations, XPS and TEM measurements — have elucidated the three-dimensional ligand structures of gold nanoparticles capped with various ratios of carboxylate-containing ligands, and enabled the determination of the most probable binding modes.

Structure–performance descriptors and the role of Lewis acidity in the methanol-to-propylene process

As of yet, no clear structure–performance descriptors have been developed to tune the catalytic activity of zeolitic methanol-to-olefin catalysts. Now it has been shown that introducing Lewis acidity into Brønsted acidic zeolites boosts their performance. Although Brønsted acidity is found to define propylene selectivity, Lewis acidity is responsible for prolonging lifetime.
