Lipid II as a target for antibiotics

Lipid II is an essential component of bacterial cell-wall biosynthesis, and as such is an attractive therapeutic target. Breukink and de Kruijff review the modes of action of compounds targeting Lipid II, and discuss their potential as treatments to combat bacterial infections.

Mode of action of teixobactins in cellular membranes

The natural antibiotic teixobactin kills bacteria by direct binding to their cognate cell wall precursors (Lipid II and III). Here authors use solid-state NMR to reveal the native binding mode of teixobactins and show that teixobactins only weakly bind to Lipid II in anionic cellular membranes.

Z-ring membrane anchors associate with cell wall synthases to initiate bacterial cell division

Proteins FtsZ, ZipA, and either PBP1A or PBP1B are required for the synthesis of preseptal peptidoglycan at the future cell division site in E. coli. Here, Pazos et al. provide evidence that ZipA and FtsA-FtsN connect the cytosolic FtsZ ring with the membrane-anchored PBPs.
