Training for British participation in the North Sea

Specialised graduates in the fields of petroleum geology, geophysics and petroleum engineering will be needed to man Britain's participation in the North Sea oil industry. Three universities in Britain have been identified as the centres for the necessary training effort. This article reviews the progress made so far.

Here the authors identify factors that shaped species diversity in the wild progenitors of chickpea, and produce wild introgression populations that increase diversity for breeding by ~100-fold, including traits of agronomic relevance.

Long-term lymphoid progenitors independently sustain naïve T and NK cell production in humans

Gene therapy (GT) using haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) provides an opportunity to trace cell fates in humans, in vivo. Here the authors present evidence in GT patients for a long term lymphoid progenitor population, surviving and maintaining de novo T and NK cell production for years, independently from HSCs.

Integrative genomic analysis implicates limited peripheral adipose storage capacity in the pathogenesis of human insulin resistance

Luca Lotta, Robert Scott, Stephen O’Rahilly, Claudia Langenberg, David Savage, Nicholas Wareham, Inês Barroso and colleagues identify 53 genomic regions associated with insulin resistance phenotypes. Their findings suggest that limited storage capacity of peripheral adipose tissue is an important etiological component in insulin-resistant cardiometabolic disease and highlight genes and mechanisms underpinning this link.
