Cervical cancer screening using DNA methylation triage in a real-world population

In a real-world Swedish cohort of 28,017 women, screening for cervical cancer using a DNA methylation-based tool, the WID-qCIN test, either alone or in combination with HPV16/18 genotyping, showed better performance than cytology in triaging HPV-positive women.

Epigenetic signatures in surrogate tissues are able to assess cancer risk and indicate the efficacy of preventive measures

Barrett, Herzog, and Aminzadeh-Gohari et al. demonstrate that tissue-specific epigenetic DNA methylation signatures define field cancerization and can predict cancer formation, even from distant sources. Mifepristone reduced mammary gland cancer risk in mice by over 50%, with this effect mirrored in changes to cervical DNA methylation patterns.

Functionally enriched epigenetic clocks reveal tissue-specific discordant aging patterns in individuals with cancer

Herzog et al. dissect functionally enriched groups of CpG associated with cellular senescence, proliferation and aging. Some non-cancer tissues from breast cancer patients show younger epigenetic ages than in controls, while breast cancer tissue looks generally older, providing evidence for discordant systemic aging in breast cancer.
