Dietary zinc deficiency promotes Acinetobacter baumannii lung infection via IL-13 in mice

Increased IL-13 drives increased bacterial dissemination and mortality following Acinetobacter baumannii lung infection of zinc-deficient mice and can be countered by anti-IL-13 antibody therapy.

The innate immune protein calprotectin promotes Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus interaction

Co-infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are common in cystic fibrosis patients. Here, the authors show that metal depletion induced by a host protein, calprotectin, promotes co-existence of both pathogens by inhibiting production of anti-staphylococcal molecules by P. aeruginosa.

An RNA-binding protein acts as a major post-transcriptional modulator in Bacillus anthracis

HitRS is a two-component system that responds to cell envelope damage in the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. Here, the authors identify an RNA-binding protein that regulates HitRS function by modulating the stability of the hitRS mRNA. In addition, the protein binds to over 70 RNAs and affects the expression of genes involved in multiple cellular processes.

Trace metals are essential micronutrients required for survival across all kingdoms of life. In this Review, Murdoch and Skaar discuss the strategies whereby vertebrate hosts limit metal or induce excess metal to prevent bacterial proliferation, a process termed nutritional immunity, and they discuss adaptive mechanisms that bacterial pathogens have evolved to survive in conditions of metal depletion or excess.
