  • In the band theory of solids, the topological properties of Bloch bands are characterized by geometric phases. For cold atoms moving in a one-dimensional optical potential the geometric phase can be measured directly using Bloch oscillations and Ramsey interferometry.

  • Topological photonic structures can be understood by solving the eigenvalue problem of Maxwell’s equations in the static case. Here, the authors study Floquet topological phases in nonlinear photonic crystals under external drive and show how non-reciprocal transport can be achieved in a Floquet Chern insulator.

  • Most higher order topological phases are realized by emulations of tight binding models. Extending these concepts to continuum theories requires the identification of invariants describing the bulk multipole order. Here the authors realize the analog of quadrupole order for a gyromagnetic photonic crystal.

  • Here, the authors predict that plasmons in two-dimensional materials with closely located electron and hole Fermi pockets can be amplified when an electrical current bias is applied along the displaced electron-hole pockets, without the need for an external gain medium.

  • A simple system made from two sheets of graphene has been converted from an insulator to a superconductor. The finding holds promise for opening up studies of an unconventional form of superconductivity.

  • Understanding and controlling symmetry in nature is of paramount importance. In this work, the authors reveal an unexpected effect of the general duality relation between piezoelectricity and piezomagnetism on their symmetries, enabling novel phononic Chern insulators.
