Electron counting and oxidation states are fundamental concepts used for understanding a molecule’s electronic structure. A recent study of PuO₂ provides insights into how covalency can impact our assessment of the electronic structures of f-element materials.

Trivalent lanthanides are typically described using an ionic picture that leads to localized magnetic moments. Here authors show that the “textbook” description of lanthanides fails for Pr⁴⁺ ions where the hierarchy of single-ion energy scales can be tailored to explore correlated phenomena in quantum materials.

Here, the authors explore a series of isostructural An(COT^big)₂ (An = Th, U, Np, Pu) complexes with clam-shell geometries, where structural and electronic characterization highlights the impact of f-orbital contributions in actinide bonding.
