  • In transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers, the spin and valley degrees of freedom are strongly coupled. Here, the authors engineer a WSe2/MoSe2 heterostructure in which inter-valley transitions of interlayer excitons exhibit a giant splitting and near-unity polarization in a magnetic field.

  • The crystallographic orientation of monolayers in van der Waals multi-layers controls their electronic and optical properties. Here the authors show how the twist angle affects Coulomb correlations governing the internal structure and the mutual interaction of excitons in homobilayers of WSe2.

  • Excitons play an important role in the optical properties of 2D semiconductors, but their spatial characterization is usually constrained by the diffraction limit. Here, the authors report near-field optical spectroscopy of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides with 20 nm resolution, revealing their spatially dependent excitonic spectra and complex dielectric function.
