Light-induced formation of partially reduced oxygen species limits the lifetime of photosystem 1-based biocathodes

Photobiodevices use photosynthetic proteins such as those of the photosystem 1 (PS1) to enable light-induced charge separation, but they suffer from limited long-term stability. Here authors employ scanning photoelectrochemical microscopy on a PS1 biocathode and find that several pathways generate oxygen radicals.

Live cyanobacteria produce photocurrent and hydrogen using both the respiratory and photosynthetic systems

Biologically ### produced electrical currents and hydrogen are new energy sources. Here, the authors find that low presser microfluidizer treatment produced cyanobacterium that can utilize electrons from respiratory and photosynthesis to promote current and hydrogen generation, without the addition of exogenous electron mediators.

A fully protected hydrogenase/polymer-based bioanode for high-performance hydrogen/glucose biofuel cells

Hydrogenases are promising alternatives to noble metal-based catalysts for hydrogen oxidation. Here the authors fully protect air-sensitive hydrogenases from high potential and oxygen damage using a polymer multilayer bioanode in a biofuel cell that delivers a benchmark open circuit voltage.

A gas breathing hydrogen/air biofuel cell comprising a redox polymer/hydrogenase-based bioanode

Hydrogen is an attractive alternative fuel, but many hydrogen-conversion electrocatalysts contain expensive materials. Here the authors report a dual-gas breathing hydrogen/air biofuel cell comprised of a modified polymer/hydrogenase bioanode and a bilirubin oxidase biocathode, delivering improved output.

Bioelectrocatalysis provides access to sustainable and highly efficient technological applications, but several limitations still prevent the large-scale integration of such devices.
