Despite mass vaccination against Bordetella Pertussis (BP), whooping cough remains a serious and prevalent disease, with case numbers increasing following a switch from the more effective but less safe whole-BP to acellular-BP vaccines. Here authors directly compare regimens involving whole BP and acellular BP priming followed by acellular boosting vaccines and identify an early interferon response that enhances Th1-polarized memory formation which is thought to be behind the increased efficiency of whole BP priming.
