Single-cell transcriptomes of pancreatic preinvasive lesions and cancer reveal acinar metaplastic cells’ heterogeneity

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma may be initiated by acinar metaplasia, but the molecular and cellular insights during this transition are unclear. Here the authors show, using single cell RNA-sequencing analyses, that mouse metaplastic acinar cells can be clustered into six cell types or states that are heterogeneous and have unique transcription programs.

Immunoproteasome expression is associated with better prognosis and response to checkpoint therapies in melanoma

The response to immunotherapy of melanoma patients is heterogeneous. Here, the authors demonstrate that a high expression of the two major components of the immunoproteasome, PSMB8 and PSMB9, modulates the production of HLA peptides and it is predictive of better survival and improved response to immune-checkpoint inhibitors of melanoma patients.

Crosslinking of Ly6a metabolically reprograms CD8 T cells for cancer immunotherapy

Chronic UV exposure has been associated with immune system suppression. Here the authors show that enhanced tumor growth and resistance to PD1 blockade in mice exposed to UV irradiation is associated with induced expression of Ly6a in CD8 + T cells and that targeting Ly6a enhances anti-tumor immune responses in models resistant to anti-PD1.

Structure of Type-I Mycobacterium tuberculosis fatty acid synthase at 3.3 Å resolution

The type-I fatty acid synthase (FAS-I) complex is essential for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and mediates the production of C₂₆ fatty acids that are precursors for the synthesis of mycolic acids. Here the authors present the 3.3 Å resolution cryo-EM structure of Mtb FAS-I, which is of interest for tuberculosis drug development.

Identification of individuals at risk of severe COVID-19 disease could inform treatment and public health planning. Here, the authors develop and validate a risk prediction model for COVID-19 mortality in Israel by building a model for severe respiratory infection and recalibrating it using COVID-19 case fatality rates.

Plankton show preferential swimming towards fluorescent cues compared to non-fluorescent targets in both the laboratory and the sea. Further, green fluorescence enhances predation success, suggesting a prey-luring effect of fluorescence in corals.
