The mechanisms governing kidney nephrogenic capacity are incompletely understood. Here, the authors reveal that METTL3-dependent RNA transmethylation is both necessary and sufficient to promote nephron progenitor differentiation, and that targeting this pathway enhances murine nephron endowment.
