Cationic nanoparticle as an inhibitor of cell-free DNA-induced inflammation

Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) released from damaged or dead cells can activate DNA sensors that exacerbate the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Here the authors use ~40 nm cationic nanoparticles to scavenge cfDNA, and demonstrate the potential for nanomedicine to relieve debilitating RA symptoms.

Deep sequencing of the MHC region in the Chinese population contributes to studies of complex disease

Xuejun Zhang, Jun Wang, Liangdan Sun, Lennart Hammarström and colleagues sequence the MHC region in 20,635 Han Chinese individuals. Their Han-MHC database allows identification of new susceptibility loci for psoriasis and could serve as a tool for investigating the role of the MHC region in other complex diseases.

Decoupling wastewater-related greenhouse gas emissions and water stress alleviation across 300 cities in China is challenging yet plausible by 2030

The rapid urbanization in China calls for an expansion of urban wastewater treatment systems, which in turn may exacerbate climate impacts. With an extensive and integrated application of existing low-carbon technologies for wastewater treatment, sludge disposal and water reuse, it is possible to substantially decouple urban water stress mitigation from greenhouse gas emissions.

Fibroblast A20 governs fibrosis susceptibility and its repression by DREAM promotes fibrosis in multiple organs

A20 gene variants are linked with systemic sclerosis (SS), but the mechanisms are unclear. Here, the authors show that A20 expression is reduced in SS skin and lungs, that its ablation in mice induces SS, and that show that fibrosis can be ameliorated by induction of A20.

Usp9x regulates Ets-1 ubiquitination and stability to control NRAS expression and tumorigenicity in melanoma

Usp9x is a deubiquitinating enzyme with altered expression in melanoma; however its functional contribution in this context is not clear. Here the authors show that Usp9x regulates the stability of the transcription factor Ets-1 that in turn impacts metastatic melanoma through increased expression of NRAS.
