Spread of white-nose syndrome on a network regulated by geography and climate

Knowledge of how a disease spreads can lead to useful predictions to help manage and contain it. Here, Maher et al.model white-nose syndrome spreading in North American bats, and show that concentrated habitat distribution and longer winters can mediate pathogen dispersal, matching the ecological traits of bats.

Candidate exome capture identifies mutation of SDCCAG8 as the cause of a retinal-renal ciliopathy

Friedhelm Hildebrandt and colleagues combine homozygosity mapping with candidate exome capture and high-throughput sequencing to identify SDCCAG8 mutations as the cause of a retinal-renal ciliopathy. They further show that SDCCAG8 localizes to centrioles and that its depletion causes renal cysts and cell polarity defects.

The podocin V260E mutation predicts steroid resistant nephrotic syndrome in black South African children with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis

Govender et al. report that the common African mutation V260E in the podocin protein is associated with autosomal recessive steroid resistant nephrotic syndrome in black South African children with biopsy-proven focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. This variant was absent in children with steroid sensitive nephrotic syndrome, indicating its utility in treatment decisions.
