Single-molecule electroluminescence and photoluminescence of polyfluorene unveils the photophysics behind the green emission band

Polyfluorenes emit blue light in organic light-emitting diodes, but their colour purity is always degraded by accompanied green emission band. Here, the authors investigate the physical origin of the green emission using electroluminescence and photoluminescence spectroscopy on a single-molecular level.

A liquid-crystalline semiconducting polymer based on thienylene–vinylene–thienylene: Enhanced hole mobilities by mesomorphic molecular ordering and thermoplastic shape-deformable characteristics

A π-conjugated polymer based on thienylene–vinylene–thienylene (TVT) units can form a thermotropic liquid-crystalline (LC) mesophase over a wide temperature range. Thermal annealing at LC temperatures strongly enhanced hole mobilities in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) owing to improved molecular ordering. Because of its thermoplasticity, the TVT-based π-conjugated polymer can also be processed into semiconducting fine microfibers and serve as a charge transport pathway in microfiber OFETs.

Synthesis and microphase-separated nanostructures of P4VP-based amphiphilic liquid-crystalline block copolymer

An amphiphilic liquid-crystalline block copolymer consisting of hydrophilic poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) and hydrophobic polymethacrylate with liquid-crystalline stilbene mesogens in the side chain (PMA(Stb)) was synthesized using reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The GISAXS and TEM measurements show that perpendicularly aligned P4VP cylinders are spontaneously formed in the PMA(Stb) matrix with a smectic layer of the liquid crystal through microphase separation.

π-conjugated naphthodithiophene homopolymers bearing alkyl/alkylthio-thienyl substituents: facile synthesis using hexamethylditin and their charge-transport and photovoltaic properties

Two new π-conjugated naphtho[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (NDT)-based homopolymers functionalized with alkyl-thienyl or alkylthio-thienyl side chains were synthesized and characterized. To simplify the synthetic route, we performed the palladium-catalyzed dehalogenative polycondensation using hexamethylditin as the condensation reagent. The alkylthio-thienyl-functionalized NDT-based homopolymer exhibited a higher hole mobility in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and higher power conversion efficiency in organic solar cells (OSCs), compared to alkyl-thienyl-functionalized one.
