Biosynthesis of the mycotoxin tenuazonic acid by a fungal NRPS–PKS hybrid enzyme

Tenuazonic acid is a mycotoxin produced by various plant pathogenic fungi but its biosynthetic gene is unknown to date. Here, the authors identify the tenuazonic acid biosynthetic gene encoding a protein with a unique KS domain that conducts cyclization step for tenuazonic acid release in Magnaporthe oryzae.

B38-CAP is a bacteria-derived ACE2-like enzyme that suppresses hypertension and cardiac dysfunction

The enzyme ACE2 is involved in cardiac pathology and can counteract heart failure and other cardio-pulmonary diseases. Here the authors show that bacteria produce an ACE2-like enzyme that is effective in suppressing cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis in mice.

DNA methylation is reconfigured at the onset of reproduction in rice shoot apical meristem

The shoot apical meristem of flowering plants transitions from forming leaves to floral organs. Here Higo et al. show that DNA methylation of many transposons that are hypermethylated in gametes is established in the SAM before flowering, suggesting it protects against harmful transposition long before germ cell differentiation.

Resolving stepping rotation in Thermus thermophilus H⁺-ATPase/synthase with an essentially drag-free probe

Rotary ATPases F_oF₁ and V_oV₁ couple ATP hydrolysis with proton flow. Furuike et al. observe ATP-driven rotation in V₁ and V_oV₁, at submillisecond resolution, and find that rate-limiting reactions in V₁ all occur at the same angle, and stator–rotor interactions in V_ointroduce additional checkpoints.
