Crystal phase-based epitaxial growth of hybrid noble metal nanostructures on 4H/fcc Au nanowires

Heterometallic nanomaterials in unusual crystal phases that are impossible to form in the bulk state can show interesting physical and chemical properties. Here, crystal-phase heterostructured 4H/fcc Au nanowires are used as seeds to epitaxially grow a variety of binary and ternary hybrid noble metal nanostructures on the phase boundary.

Recurrent acquisition of cytosine methyltransferases into eukaryotic retrotransposons

Cytosine methyltransferases (DNMTs) often silence transposons in eukaryotic genomes. Here the authors describe the recurrent acquisition of DNMTs by transposons from two distantly-related eukaryotes and suggest that methylation of CG dinucleotides by transposon DNMTs could modify the host epigenome in dinoflagellates.

Fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase 1 functions as a protein phosphatase to dephosphorylate histone H3 and suppresses PPARα-regulated gene transcription and tumour growth

Wang and colleagues identify a protein phosphatase role for the metabolic enzyme fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase 1 that, upon phosphorylation by PERK, dephosphorylates histone H3 and modulates PPARα-mediated gene expression to inhibit liver cancer progression.
