Stiffening of graphene oxide films by soft porous sheets

Graphene oxide sheets have been used as a model system to study how the mechanical properties of individual 2D building blocks scale to their bulk form. Here the authors show that the modulus of multilayer graphene oxide films can be enhanced if some of the sheets are weakened by introducing in-plane porosity.

Tablet-level origin of toughening in abalone shells and translation to synthetic composite materials

The mechanism responsible for the toughness of nacre, the hierarchical iridescent material in seashells, is still unknown. Espinosa and colleagues show that the waviness of its tablets leads to interfacial hardening, and ultimately to energy dissipation, when the material is stressed.

Measurements of near-ultimate strength for multiwalled carbon nanotubes and irradiation-induced crosslinking improvements

The mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes rarely match the values predicted by theory owing to a combination of artefacts introduced during sample preparation and inadequate measurements. However, by avoiding chemical treatments and using high-resolution imaging, it is possible to obtain values of the mean fracture strength that exceed previous values by approximately a factor of three.

Biasing chemical reaction pathways in a particular molecule may lead to new material properties. Here, the authors report mechanochemical covalent epoxide-to-ether functional group transformations, deviating from classical epoxide ring-opening reactions, in suspended graphene oxide membranes.
