Dendritic excitation–inhibition balance shapes cerebellar output during motor behaviour

Here, the authors combinein vivopatch-clamp recordings and optogenetics to show that balanced dendritic excitation and inhibition provides a sensitive ‘push-pull’ mechanism that generates the bidirectional modulation of Purkinje cell SSp output necessary for normal locomotor behaviour.

Typical development of synaptic and neuronal properties can proceed without microglia in the cortex and thalamus

Microglia are proposed to have a role in brain development through synaptic engulfment and paracrine signaling. O’Keeffe et al. show that certain neurodevelopmental processes attributed to microglia can proceed normally even in the absence of these cells.

High-fidelity transmission of sensory information by single cerebellar mossy fibre boutons

The first intracellular recordings from presynaptic boutons in the intact mammalian brain are presented. These results contradict the prevailing views (derived from in vitro work) on how the cerebellum integrates sensory information to control movement, by revealing a hitherto unexpected sensitivity of single brain connections to stimuli from the environment.

Interneuron- and GABA_A receptor-specific inhibitory synaptic plasticity in cerebellar Purkinje cells

Rebound potentiation (RP), a form of inhibitory plasticity in the cerebellum, is characterized by an increase in GABAergic synaptic currents. Here the authors demonstrate that RP is both interneuron input-specific and GABA_Areceptor subunit-specific and serves to regulate Purkinje cell firing patterns.
