  • While C–H functionalizations at C2 and C4 positions of pyridines are enabled by their inherent reactivities, selective derivatization at the C3 position has long posed a significant challenge. Here, the authors report a mild and regioselective method for C3-amination that relies on the photochemical reaction of Zincke imines with amidyl radicals generated from N-aminopyridinium salts.

  • Selective electrochemical oxidation of ammonia provides an ideal pathway to synthesize hydrazine, but this process is outcompeted by a more favourable overoxidation to N2. A molecular ruthenium catalyst has now flipped the script, circumventing the thermodynamic challenges to selectively generate hydrazine.

  • Catalytic asymmetric deuterations rely largely on two-electron reaction manifolds and are mostly limited to benzylic positions. Here, a metal-free platform using peptide- or sugar-derived chiral thiols and deuterium oxide allows for asymmetric open-shell deuteration at non-benzylic positions under visible-light irradiation.
