Molluscs assemble layers of material in the shells around them with a high level of control. Here the authors observe the structural evolution of layer formation and propose a mechanism reminiscent of topological defect dynamics in liquid crystals.

Self-similar mesostructure evolution of the growing mollusc shell reminiscent of thermodynamically driven grain growth

The morphology and mesostructure of the prismatic layer of a growing mollusc shell is observed by means of high-resolution synchrotron-based tomography and is shown to be fully predicted by classical theories of normal grain growth.

Control of biosilica morphology and mechanical performance by the conserved diatom gene Silicanin-1

Stefan Görlich et al. investigate the role of a highly-conserved diatom gene Sin1 in the biogenesis of the biosilica cell wall. Analyzing Sin1 knockout mutants of the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana, they find that this gene is necessary for generating mechanically robust cell walls.
