Aiolos restricts the generation of antigen-inexperienced, virtual memory CD8⁺ T cells in mice

The mechanism(s) controlling CD8+ virtual memory T cell (TVM) development are still under investigation. Here, using uninfected or IAV-challenged Ikzf3-deficient mice, the authors identify the transcription factor Aiolos as a negative regulator of TVM cell development by repressing Eomes and IL-15/STAT5 signaling.

Palmitoylome profiling reveals S-palmitoylation–dependent antiviral activity of IFITM3

Proteomic analysis in dendritic cells identifies three palmitoylation sites within IFITM3, an innate immunity protein involved in inhibition of early replication of several viruses. Palmitoylation of IFITM3 regulates its clustering in membranes and is crucial for inhibition of influenza virus infection.

Gasdermin D promotes influenza virus-induced mortality through neutrophil amplification of inflammation

Gasdermin D (GSDMD) is a pore forming protein activated by inflammasome derived caspases. Here the authors characterize the function of GSDMD in mouse influenza virus infection and show that immunopathology is reduced in the absence of GSDMD and involves changes in neutrophil function.

Adjuvant-dependent impact of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccines during heterologous infection by a SARS-related coronavirus

Here, Dillard and Taft-Benz et al. show in a female mouse model how different adjuvants affect inactivated vaccine-mediated protection against homologous SARS-CoV-2 and heterologous SARS-CoV-1-like coronaviruses. They find that an aluminum hydroxide-adjuvanted vaccine can increase risk of adverse outcomes during heterologous infection.

Three SARS-CoV-2 spike protein variants delivered intranasally by measles and mumps vaccines are broadly protective

In this study, the authors developed intranasal measles virus and mumps virus-based trivalent vaccines, each expressing three distinct SARS-CoV-2 stabilized prefusion spike proteins. They show that the intranasal vaccines provide protection against infection of SARS-CoV-2 variants in small animal models.
