Hunger makes Drosophila larvae move faster in search of food. Koon and colleagues show that starvation increases the branching of octopaminergic motoneurons' axonal terminal arbors, driven by octopamine released from these same motoneurons. The increased locomotor activity of starved larvae requires octopaminergic signaling.

Structural basis of meiotic telomere attachment to the nuclear envelope by MAJIN-TERB2-TERB1

The meiotic telomere complex (MAJIN, TERB1, TERB2) tethers telomere ends to the nuclear envelope. Here the authors present the crystal structure of human MAJIN-TERB2 and combine biophysical approaches and structured illumination microscopy analysis of mouse meiotic chromosomes to characterize the molecular architecture of the wider MAJIN-TERB2-TERB1 complex and its interactions with TRF1.

Coiled-coil structure of meiosis protein TEX12 and conformational regulation by its C-terminal tip

The X-ray crystal structures of C-terminal mutants of the coiled-coil protein cancer testis antigen TEX12 in combination with modeling of the TEX12 wild-type dimer reveal the protein’s control of its oligomeric state, which resembles assembly of its complex with synaptonemal complex central element protein SYCE2.
