  • Neuronal migration is vital for neuronal circuit morphogenesis and is thought to rely on microtubule-actomyosin crosstalk. Here, the authors use super-resolution imaging and the drebrin microtubule-actin crosslinking protein to show that microtubule-actomyosin coupling controls the direction of centrosome and somal motility.

  • MCL-1 is an anti-apoptotic BCL-2 family member and is frequently upregulated in cancer, but the mechanism by which it promotes cell survival has been elusive. Opferman and colleagues provide insight into this process by showing that MCL-1 exists in different forms with discrete localizations and functions. MCL-1 variants targeted to the outer mitochondrial membrane antagonize BAX and BAK activation, whereas an N-terminally truncated isoform localizes to the mitochondrial matrix and regulates mitochondrial metabolism.

  • ABCC4 is a chemotherapeutic drug exporter highly expressed in acute myeloid leukemia. Here, the authors demonstrate that MPP1 anchors ABCC4 to the outer cell membrane mediating drug resistance in leukemic cells and identify antimycin A as a chemical probe that disrupts such interaction and restores sensitivity.
