Irradiation of a chromophore causes photothermal heat generation which triggers photothermal therapy and photoacoustic imaging with a high light-to-heat efficiency, biocompatibility, and water-solubility. Here, the authors design water-dispersible, nanocaged polypyrroles within thermoresponsive single-chain nanoparticles, achieving efficient photothermal conversion by self-amplifying effects, significantly enhancing therapeutic efficacy at low radiant fluxes.
