  • Phenols and their derivatives are ubiquitous in nature and important within the chemical industry. Their properties are linked to their substitution patterns, but meta-isomers are underrepresented due to the difficulty of their synthesis. Now we address this challenge by describing a 1,2-transposition of phenols that enables a formal para- to meta-isomerization.

  • Indole-5,6-quinone (IQ) is a long-sought intermediate and structural subunit of eumelanin pigments whose instability has precluded isolation and characterization. It has now been shown that a sterically shielded derivative of IQ exhibits hallmark eumelanin properties, including near-infrared absorption, ultrafast nonradiative decay and a persistent semiquinone radical formed by comproportionation.

  • Many biosynthetic cyclizations are catalysed by iron oxygenases and appear to involve long-lived radical species. Now, mimicking these biosynthetic transformations, the total synthesis of highly oxidized lignan natural products has been reported using redox-neutral photocatalysis to enable late-stage radical cyclizations that install challenging 5- and 11-membered rings.
