Bacterial infections and the associated pain remain difficult to treat simultaneously with current therapies. Here, the authors develop “drug-caged drug” nanoparticles that enable visible light-triggered dual uncaging of tetracaine and nitric oxide, effectively treating MRSA-infected mice in cutaneous wound and septic arthritis models while alleviating infection-associated pain.
