  • The role of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) in mediating the impacts of drought in tropical trees is unclear. Here, the authors analyse leaf and branch NSC in 82 Amazon tree species across a Basin-wide precipitation gradient, finding that allocation of leaf NSC to soluble sugars is higher in drier sites and is coupled to tree hydraulic status.

  • Mutations in Kindlin-1 result in Kindler syndrome, which is marked by skin blistering, premature skin aging and increased risk for skin cancer. Reinhard Fässler and his colleagues have developed a new mouse model of the condition, revealing new cellular and molecular mechanistic insight into the pathology of the syndrome.

  • Capacity for carbon capture and storage in forests may not be monolithic but instead a function of complex dynamics of forest strata and age. The smaller trees that make up the understory in African tropical forests store their carbon longer as compared to sub-canopy and canopy trees and they represent a disproportionately large share of the carbon sink, in spite of their small size.

  • In this opinion article, the authors discuss multicentre clinical trials in Asia. Asians have been under-represented in many clinical trials; differences in cardiovascular disease risk and drug responses between Asians and white people underscore the importance of ethnicity-specific intervention testing. Challenges specific to Asia need to be addressed before Asia can rival Europe and the USA as a location-of-choice for clinical trials.

  • Percutaneous transcatheter mechanical occlusion of the left atrial appendage (LAA) is a nonpharmacological treatment option for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation who cannot receive anticoagulant drugs. In this Review, Cheuk-Man Yu and colleagues present the rationale for LAA occlusion in patients with AF, the available occlusion devices and the clinical evidence for their use, and discuss the role of imaging techniques in device implantation and the management of procedural complications.
