The matricellular protein CCN1 mediates neutrophil efferocytosis in cutaneous wound healing

Neutrophils are the first line of response to injury but their persistence can inhibit the resolution phase of tissue repair. Here the authors show that an extracellular matrix protein promotes neutrophil clearance by macrophages, serving as a bridge between the two cell types and speeding up tissue repair.

Intestinal stem cells contribute to homeostasis through a balance between self-renewal and differentiation. Here the authors show that CCN1 is an intestinal stem cell niche factor that activates integrin αvβ3/αvβ5 signaling to regulate proliferation and differentiation through distinct downstream pathways.

CCN1 is a matricellular protein with a variety of functions, including an effect on wound healing and an association with inflammation. Here, the authors identify a possible mechanism by showing that CCN1 mediates the clearance of bacterial infections in mice and activates TLR signalling.

During wound healing, the matricellular protein, CCN1, through its adhesion receptors α₆β₁ and heparan sulphate proteoglycans, activates senescence in fibroblasts by activation of p53. Senescence induced by CCN1 prevents fibrosis during tissue repair.
