The maximum pentagon separation rule provides a guideline for the structures of endohedral metallofullerenes

Stable fullerenes often follow the isolated pentagon rule, but there are increasing examples of compounds that do not. Now, a maximum pentagon separation rule is proposed, which predicts that the most stable cages are those with pentagons having the largest separation.

Characterization of a strong covalent Th³⁺–Th³⁺ bond inside an I_h(7)-C₈₀ fullerene cage

Studying the nature of actinide-actinide bonds is important for understanding the electronic structure of the 5f elements, but the synthesis of these chemical bonds remains extremely challenging. Here, the authors report a strong covalent Th-Th bond formed between two rarely accessible Th³⁺ ions, stabilized inside a fullerene cage.

Polyoxometalate electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant metals for efficient water oxidation in acidic media

Electrochemical water oxidation in acidic media is a promising water-splitting technique, but typically requires noble metal catalysts. Now, two polyoxometalate salts based on earth-abundant metals have shown excellent catalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction. The barium salt of a cobalt-phosphotungstate polyanion outperformed the state-of-the-art IrO₂ catalyst at pHs lower than 1.

Real-time molecular scale observation of crystal formation

Homogeneous crystal nucleation has now been observed by transmission electron microscopy in real time on a molecular scale. Countercation-dependent observations of polyoxometalate proto-crystal formation confirm existence of a higher energy classical molecular attachment mechanism, as well as a lower energy two-step mechanism via an intermediate dense phase.
