Tuning network topology and vibrational mode localization to achieve ultralow thermal conductivity in amorphous chalcogenides

The reduction in thermal conductivity is usually achieved by increasing the scattering rate or localization of heat carriers. Here, the authors propose a mechanism to suppress the thermal transport in amorphous systems such as SiTe binary alloys via tailoring the cross-linking network between the atoms.

Integrated nanophotonics is an emerging research direction that has attracted great interests. Here, the authors show upon substituting Te with Se, the thermal conductivity of ordered Ge₂Sb₂Te₅ transitions from an electron to a phonon dominated regime.

Observation of solid-state bidirectional thermal conductivity switching in antiferroelectric lead zirconate (PbZrO₃)

Materials with tunable thermal properties enable on-demand control of temperature and heat flow. Here, the authors demonstrate how thermal conductivity of an antiferroelectric solid can be bi-directionally switched to 10% lower and 25% higher values without any moving components.

Interface controlled thermal resistances of ultra-thin chalcogenide-based phase change memory devices

Designing efficient, fast and low power consumption phase change memories remains a challenge. Aryana et al. propose a strategy to reduce operating currents by manipulating the interfacial thermal resistance between the phase change unit and the electrodes without incorporating additional insulating layers.
