Magnetic heterostructures are a platform to realize magnetic ordering that differs from the component layers, a prime example being synthetic ferrimagnets. Here, the authors use X-ray magnetic circular dichroism supported with a multiscale approach (density functional theory, atomistic spin dynamics and micromagnetic simulations) to investigate the induced magnetic moment, magnetic exchange-coupling and spin textures in the ferrimagnetically coupled Pt/Co/Gd heterostructures.
