  • Declining oocyte quality contributes to age-related reduction in fertility; however, the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. Here Liu et al. reveal that replenishing mevalonate pathway metabolites and supplementation with a natural compound, 8-isopentenyl flavone, improve aged oocyte quality by restoring cortical F-actin through CDC42 and RAC1 prenylation.

  • Oocyte meiotic defects increase with age and contribute to decreased oocyte quality. Here the authors show that granulosa cell mevalonate pathway abnormalities contribute to aneuploidy during ovarian aging and that supplementation with mevalonate metabolites improves oocyte quality, providing a potential therapeutic strategy for promoting female reproductive longevity.

  • Before ovulation, a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) triggers the resumption of meiosis in oocytes, which is mediated by EGF-like growth factors. Here, the authors show that HDAC3 inhibits mouse oocyte maturation by negatively regulating the expression of EGF-like factor before the LH surge.
