Microelectrode characterization of coral daytime interior pH and carbonate chemistry

Predicting coral response to ocean acidification is dependent on our understanding of their internal carbonate chemistry. Here, using microelectrodes, the authors show that corals elevate pH and carbonate ion concentration in their calcifying fluid, but keep total dissolved inorganic carbon low.

Decline of forereef corals in response to recent warming linked to history of thermal exposure

Increasing ocean temperatures are impacting the health of coral reef ecosystems, but understanding how the response of corals varies spatially remains important for conservation efforts. Now research shows that skeletal extension within forereef colonies of the coral Siderastrea siderea declined with increasing seawater temperature, whereas extension rates of backreef and nearshore colonies were not impacted.

Calcifying species have diverse responses to ocean acidification, but the underlying mechanisms are not well-constrained. Here, Liu et al. show that O. neapolitana maintains its calcification site pH and utilizes more CO₂ compared to HCO₃⁻ to support its growth under high-CO₂ conditions.

Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

In an inter-laboratory study, the authors compare the accuracy and performance of three optical density calibration protocols (colloidal silica, serial dilution of silica microspheres, and colony-forming unit (CFU) assay). They demonstrate that serial dilution of silica microspheres is the best of these tested protocols, allowing precise and robust calibration that is easily assessed for quality control and can also evaluate the effective linear range of an instrument.
