Developing medical foundation models is bottlenecked by significant resource consumption and lack of large labeled datasets. Here, the authors present a retinal AI model, RETFound-Green, matching top performance using half the data and 400 times less compute. It’s faster, lighter, and more eco-friendly, offering a sustainable path for medical AI.
