  • LRRTM1 is a post synaptic adhesion protein, that promotes AMPA receptor mediated synaptic transmission. Here the authors show that LRRTM1 and the adhesion molecule SynCAM 1 act together to organize synapses in the prefrontal cortex with relevance for cognitive function in mice.

  • Papa et al. show that phosphorylation by PKA of four residues in Rad, a calcium channel inhibitor, is required to mediate the β-adrenergic-induced increase in calcium current and contractile force. Additionally, Rad-phosphosite-mutant mice showed reduced basal heart rate and contractility. Conversely, expression of mutant calcium channel unable to bind wild-type or phosphosite-mutant Rad was sufficient to enhance basal calcium influx and contractility, independently of β-adrenergic stimulation.

  • Synaptic vesicle fusion involves a multi-protein assembly called the SNARE complex that is tightly regulated both spatially and temporally. Here Kavanagh et al. show that after vesicle fusion and SNARE complex disassembly in the synapse, the SNARE protein syntaxin1a is sequestered in a monomeric form by munc18-1, preventing ectopic SNARE complex assembly.

  • Planned relocation of communities exposed to climate hazards is an important adaptation measure.
