Fumio Hayashi et al. show that rhodopsin forms transient clusters in retinal disk membranes using single molecule tracking with near-infrared wavelength. They find that the raftophobic disc periphery excludes rhodopsin clusters and transient rhodopsin-clusters centrally confined in the membrane provide stochastic platforms for G protein signaling.
