Complete defluorination of diverse per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances can be achieved in the UV/sulfite system. Further experimental and theoretical evaluation demonstrates that the rate-limiting step is electron transfer from hydrated electrons, rather than the subsequent C−F bond cleavage.
