  • Porous media that display a gradient in the structure of their networks are common in nature, but the understanding of the drainage patterns in such media is still limited. We propose a theoretical framework that allows to better quantify these patterns, and we validate it both with experiments in 3D printed models and with numerical simulations.

  • The processes of earthquakes and plastic deformation are examples of systems which respond to slow external forces by avalanche dynamics. Here, the authors show how a fundamental fingerprint of such dynamics - the average shape of the avalanches - evolves with its universality class.

  • Fingering patterns form spontaneously when a non-wetting viscous liquid displaces a dry granular mixture in a confined flow cell. The authors show how these patterns are controlled by the balance between viscous, capillary, and frictional forces.
