  • Influencing the products of a reaction through controlling the state of the reactants is a notable goal for chemists. It has now been shown that the reactivity of a pair of Fermi-coupled vibrational states of CH3D(v1-I and v1-II) with a chlorine atom depends not only on the constituent basis modes, but also on the relative phase of the two modes in their wave-functions.

  • Two important properties in an activated chemical reaction are the barrier height and its geometrical dependence. Now, a method has been developed to directly map the angle-dependent barrier to reaction from polarized scattering data for the Cl + CHD3 reaction. The method should be applicable to many other direct reactions with a colinear barrier.

  • Steric effects are a key concept for understanding chemical reactivity. Now, by aligning reactants through control of the polarization of the infrared laser in a crossed-beam experiment, a three-dimensional view of how a reaction proceeds is reported. The results show striking dependences on the direction from which the laser-aligned reagents approach.
