Ultra-thin lithium aluminate spinel ferrite films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and low damping

Ferromagnetic insulators offer low magnetic damping, and potentially efficient magnetic switching, making them ideal candidates for spin-based information processing. Here, Zheng et al introduce a ferromagnetic insulator spinel, Li_0.5Al_1.0Fe_1.5O₄, with low magnetic damping, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, and no magnetic dead layer.

A spiking artificial neuron based on one diffusive memristor, one transistor and one resistor

An artificial neuron that is based on one diffusive memristor, one transistor and one resistor can exhibit six key biological neuronal characteristics—leaky integration, threshold firing, cascaded connection, intrinsic plasticity, refractory period and stochasticity—with the footprint of a single transistor when vertically integrated.

Giant optical anisotropy in a quasi-one-dimensional crystal

Highly crystalline BaTiS₃ has been shown to exhibit record-breaking birefringence of 0.76 in the wavelength range of 7–16 μm. The large anisotropy is a result of its quasi-one-dimensional structure.

Observation of the intrinsic bandgap behaviour in as-grown epitaxial twisted graphene

Stacking graphene in such a way that each layer is rotated relative to the one below provides a way of controlling the properties of this useful material. Park et al. now demonstrate a technique for fabricating this twisted graphene in such a way that it has an intrinsic electronic bandgap.

High frequency atomic tunneling yields ultralow and glass-like thermal conductivity in chalcogenide single crystals

Defect-free crystals showing the glassy trend of low thermal conductivity with a monotonic increase with temperature are desirable but rare.
